Care and Cleaning for Ceramic, Stoneware and Porcelain Plates

Simple tips for washing, storing and using your dinnerware sets, while reducing scratches, chips and visible wear.

First rule: always read the product information

Not all ceramic, stoneware or porcelain plates have the same care instructions. Some are suitable for dishwashers and microwaves, while others need more careful handling.

Before buying or using a new dinnerware set, always check the maker’s instructions. Decoration, metallic rims, glazes and matt finishes can change the washing rules.

Dishwasher

Check whether the maker clearly states that the product is dishwasher safe.

Microwave

Avoid the microwave if the plate has metallic details or if the product page is unclear.

Storage

Stack plates carefully, especially if they are heavy, decorated or have a delicate finish.

How to wash plates without damaging them

Rinse before food dries

Dried food and sauces can need more scrubbing. It is better to rinse first.

Avoid very abrasive sponges

On matt, decorated or delicate finishes, a rough sponge can leave marks.

Avoid strong temperature shocks

Do not put a very hot plate under cold water, or the opposite.

Load the dishwasher carefully

Place plates securely so they do not knock against each other during the cycle.

Dishwasher: what to check

  • Check whether the maker says the product is dishwasher safe.
  • Do not overload the rack.
  • Avoid letting plates press too hard against each other.
  • Use a gentle cycle if the plates are decorated or more fragile.
  • After the first washes, check for marks, dullness or scratches.
  • For important or costly sets, consider hand washing the most delicate pieces.

Microwave: watch decorations and rims

Many modern plates are suitable for microwaves, but this is not a fixed rule. The risk increases when a plate has metallic details, special decoration or unclear product information.

Avoid metallic detailsGold, silver or metallic rims are not suitable for microwave use.
Check the glazeSome glazes or finishes can have specific care instructions.
Do not heat empty platesUse the microwave only according to the maker’s instructions.
Check the temperatureIf the plate becomes very hot, handle it carefully and check the instructions.

How to store dinnerware sets

Storage matters as much as washing. Many chips happen when plates are stacked badly or taken out in a hurry.

  • Stack fewer plates at a time if they are heavy.
  • Place larger plates at the bottom and smaller plates on top.
  • Use soft separators for elegant or decorated sets.
  • Avoid dragging one plate across another.
  • Do not force large plates into narrow cupboards.
  • Keep the pieces you use most within easy reach.

Marks, scratches and dullness: what to do

Some marks can come from cutlery, stacking or aggressive washing. Matt and textured finishes can show these marks more easily than glossy surfaces.

Cutlery marks

Use non-abrasive sponges and gentle detergents. Avoid aggressive products unless the maker recommends them.

Dullness after washing

Check the dishwasher detergent, salt and rinse aid.

Chipped rims

Reduce knocks, heavy stacking and strong contact between plates during washing.

No. Many sets are compatible, but it depends on the material, glaze and decoration. Always check the product page.

Can I put stoneware in the microwave?

Many stoneware products are suitable, but not all. Always check the maker’s instructions.

How can I avoid chipped rims?

Avoid knocks, stacking too many heavy plates and unstable placement in the dishwasher.

Do matt finishes scratch?

They can show signs of use more easily. Use gentle sponges and read reviews before buying.

Is it better to hand wash elegant dinnerware sets?

If the set is decorated, thin or costly, hand washing can be the more careful choice.

Choose a set that is easy to care for

Before buying, compare materials, everyday use and washing instructions.
